The Nebraska Capitol Environs Commission approved minutes from its February meeting before taking action on a certificate of appropriateness request for a proposed Lincoln Public Schools parking lot at 2403 and 2411 J St. Planning officials said the proposal, previously discussed during the commission’s March meeting, includes updated landscaping plans featuring double rows of trees and low-maintenance vegetation along the western edge of the property within the Capitol Environs District. Commissioners discussed the types of vegetation proposed, visibility concerns, potential impacts on an existing tree and possible future security measures for the site. Following discussion members approved the certificate of appropriateness.
Commissioners also discussed upcoming streetscape planning tied to the federal parking garage project along 16th Street, with updated landscaping plans expected later this summer. Chair Kile Johnson requested future discussion regarding traffic signals near Lincoln High School that partially obstruct views of the Capitol, while commissioners also raised concerns about tree growth obstructing views along J Street and potential future trimming or removal efforts. Representatives from the Nebraska State Capitol Commission provided updates on planned HVAC-related exterior work at the Capitol, including window recaulk work expected during the summer months. The meeting adjourned at 8:48 a.m.
