On Aug. 12, Flatwater Free Press reporter Chris Bowling joined Boston’s largest National Public Radio station to discuss his investigative reporting into Omaha’s lead Superfund site. Indira Lakshmanan, co-host of the nationally broadcast show “Here & Now” from WBUR, interviewed Bowling.
During the segment, Bowling talked about the Flatwater Free Press’ yearslong project to test Omaha residents soil for lead, what the results showed and how local and federal leaders reacted to that information.
Omaha is home to the largest residential lead Superfund site in America due to more than a century of pollution from downtown factories. The federal government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars digging lead out of residents’ yards. But it does not routinely retest properties to make sure the soil stays lead free.
