Announcing new hires

Our newsroom continues to grow

Your support is making an impact. Just this fall, thanks to your donations, we shared the story of how three Nebraska Native tribes are buying back their ancestral land. We explored how remote work is changing career opportunities in the Sandhills. And we launched our series Pigs and Power on how the Governor built his pork empire — and the inevitable conflicts between his business interests and the public interest.

We have much more in store. Thanks to you, our newsroom is growing. I penned a short article on all of our latest hires — read it here. In this message, I just want to express our gratitude and share a few highlights:

Chris Bowling has joined us from The Reader. A UNL grad and a journalist since 2014, Chris has worked at the Omaha World-Herald, Lincoln Journal Star, and the Norfolk Daily News. He’s also been a stringer for the New York Times. His coverage will focus on the Omaha area.

Karlha Velasquez Rivas comes to us from El Perico, Omaha’s Spanish-language newspaper. She’s bringing her multimedia skillset to Flatwater’s sister publication, Silicon Prairie News, which covers the state’s start-up and entrepreneurial communities. Her more than 10 years as a journalist has touched on tourism, politics, science, and ecology.

With Chris and Karlha, that makes 11 journalists under our employ!

We’ve been building capacity on the business side, too. This summer we hired Christine Baude as the Director of Operations & Finance, and in August we hired Barbara Soderlin as the Director of Advancement. They bring new skills and perspectives to our leadership team — the kind of smarts we need to build an organization for the long haul.

Again, read my column for a bit more insight into these roles, these professionals, and how they’ll help us write the next chapter in Nebraska journalism.

We couldn’t do this without you. With gratitude,

—Matt Wynn, Executive Director
