The Douglas County Board of Commissioners meeting opened with a somber acknowledgment of recent losses, including the passing of Commissioner Roger Garcia’s father and former Douglas County Commissioner Marc Kraft.
The meeting’s most contentious topic emerged during IT coordinator Dianne Wallace’s presentation on integrating AI into county services. Proposals included a chatbot to guide residents on property taxes, vaccinations and disaster recovery, but opposition quickly arose. Omaha resident Larry Store labeled the AI initiative “the death of America,” comparing it to dystopian warnings from “1984” and “Soylent Green.” Commissioners Maureen Boyle and Chris Rodgers reassured the public about oversight, citing the technology’s vetting by national associations.
Also during the meeting, the board reauthorized $33.7 million for mental health services within the corrections department and $22.4 million for construction at the county mental health center. Patrick Bloomingdale, chief administrative officer, described this next step as a procedural necessity for federal auditing.
The board also reviewed corrections statistics, revealing a 15-year low in inmate population and significant savings through pretrial release programs, spotlighting Douglas County’s focus on efficiency and reform in detention operations.
The board concluded with discussions on health insurance changes before moving into executive session at 10:02 a.m.
